I Don't Get It

Posted By: Dave Guy · 6/2/2012 7:55:00 AM

I’m writing this on Saturday morning. That’s the time when quiet neighbourhoods get invaded by bargain hunters. It’s Yard Sale day!

It’s a fun activity which my wife, Angie, and I have participated in frequently. Like others, we’re on the lookout for good “deals”. We might negotiate a bit on pricing, but we respect the sellers’ right to remain firm on what they expect.

With that in mind, I just don’t get it when I watch the Canadian and American Picker shows on television. They’re popular programs and I am a regular viewer. However, why should those guys get a better deal than me?

The “pickers” seem to think it’s their right to get a lower price so they can re-sell and make money. That’s the same as me going into a local retailer and telling them that I will pay $400 for a $1,200 product because I plan to re-sell it at a profit. I think the dealer would put me in my place quickly, and rightfully so.

Why should a picker get a lower price than me?

I don’t get it!!!! (But I love the shows)

I agree with you 100% Dave,,I watch those shows as well and I do not agree with them beating the seller down low so they can re-sell and make a profit. The same goes with Pawn Stars

I too am a great Fan of the Canadian Pickers'...I don't agree with your "not expecting them to make a profit....off of you" tho' They are doing this for a living, and they buy in "bulk", plus, most that they buy from "do this as a hobby". It"s like, when we go "yard sale'n" we want and expect to get whatever we're looking to buy at a lower price. And why shouldn't we...they've put it out here for a reason...THEY WANT TO GET RID OF IT.. so when they won't come down in price...I won't buy it. Do you like The American Pickers' , now there's a couple of crooks...they are after "the dirt-bag price" and most of the time I think these guys, Mike an Frank (both of whom, need showers) know "that they are taking you to the cleaners" anyway, back on track... I luv the Canadian Pickers, Scott an Sheldon are more than fair (most times) would absolutely enjoy meeting them, or at least see their truck go by...ha ha And next time you go to buy something old and used, ask yourself... "Why should I pay TOP price for this, it is, after all USED...and if you are selling at a yard sale an want 10-bucks for something, ask 15/16-bucks for it, that way "they" have room for negotiations just say'n....thanx for this chance to voice my opinion... I thoroughly enjoy Cat Country and make all around me angry at times for NOT listening to anything else:)

JanM, I'm with you in preferring Canadian Pickers to the American version. I have no problem with anyone making a profit on anything. My only beef is the pickers' belief that they are "entitled" to pay less than you or me. Wanda, I finally saw someone blast Rick Harrison's greed on Pawn Stars recently. However, I'm still a fan and always get a kick out of him saying "That's not going to happen".
