What I Almost Ran Over This Weekend

My wife and I drive back roads quite often on the way to friends’ homes and horse barns all around the area. And when you’re on back roads it’s not uncommon to see some animals along the way: racoons, porcupines, deer, skunks, deer, squirrels and so on. This weekend we came across something that was a bit different.

We were on the way back from Maitland just before the bridge on the 236 when I saw something in the road and it didn’t seem to be moving. I thought maybe someone had hit an aforementioned animal or maybe lost something off their car. So I slowed the car down as we got closer. Turns out it was a turtle, and a pretty good sized turtle at that. My wife named it Speedy.

My daughter and I almost hit one like this a couple of years ago on Belmont Road. He was slightly bigger with points on the back of his shell. We got out so we could turn him turn him back toward the grass and he hopped and snapped at us! He was very quick, but we managed to get him to hop back into the grass. Whether he stayed, I don't know.

From what I can tell and what I've been told Jim's right, they are a kind of snapping turtle. Luckily we didn't try to touch it. All fingers are still where they are supposed to be.
