Open Farm Day 2012
Sunday, September 16th was Open Farm Day across the Maritimes. I think, in all, there were over 125 farms in the region open to the public, so people could see what kind of work our farmers do. And, I HAD to check it out -- so glad I did!
My sister, my sister-in-law, and my niece and I visited three farms in the Windsor area. The weather was perfect -- sunny, and not too cold, but, not too warm. It was so fun watching my niece explore. She must have touched every single pumpkin at the Dill Farm in Windsor, and even picked out some tiny pumpkins and gourds of her own to take home. I loved visitng Dill's, and seeing all the pumpkins.

Dill's is certainly known for giant pumpkins. I didn't see any around the property, other than some unfinished ones in the patches, but, with the Hants County Ex underway in Windsor, I suspect there were giant gourds on display there.
Now, at Dill's, they were also selling little knitted pumpkin hats, and, well, Auntie Mandy could not resist:

I love how she just blends in!! Cutest little pumpkin in the patch!
Auntie Mandy had to have some fun among the pumpkins, too:

The other farms included orchards and animals, and were fun to check out, too:

I would have had a blast on my own, but, sharing it with my niece made it all that much better. It's certainly puts a smile on your face to watch how excited little ones get when they experience something new.
As for next year, I'm planning ahead for Open Farm Day, so I can see even more farms, and maybe even try milking a cow, or something! And, I want to check out some farms closer to my home in Hilden.
I'm also going to take this chance to say a big thanks to the farmers, for not only opening up your farms, but for all the work you do year-round.
THANK YOU!
