CHAMBER GROUP SAYS "NO" TO HST INCREASE

An increase in the HST would only hurt competitiveness and remove money from circulation.

That's the oppinion of the Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce, who are calling upon the province to be more business-like and learn to do more with less, just like individuals.

The chamber group is urging the province to look inward as it attempts to find ways to cut costs and bring the province back to balance.

They say they are especially concerned about the impact of an an HST increase in Cumberland County, which they say is already struggling with cross-border shopping due to lower taxes in New Brunswick.


BLUES FESTIVAL LINEUP TAKING SHAPE

The annual Dutch Mason Blues Festival in Truro-Bible Hill is still five months away, but already fans are getting an idea of the top talent that will appear this summer.

The Robert Cray Band and blues singer Johnny Lang will be the festival's headliners on Saturday night, August 14th.

According to the web-based concert information site, Pollstar, this summer's festival will kick off the night before with performances by The Fabulous Thunderbirds and blues guitar legend, Johnny Winter.


COUPLE FACE MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES

Additional charges have been laid against a Halifax couple alleged to have seriously injured their infant daughter who later died in hospital last year.

Ashiqur Rahman and his partner, Jane Gomes, are now facing manslaughter charges.

The couple who were both 23 at the time of the baby's death recently pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault.

They're expected to appear in Halifax court Wednesday.


LOCAL SPORTS

The Truro Bearcats visit Bridgewater tonight in game two of their division semi final series in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League, which the Cats lead 1-0. Gerry Hale will provide frequent updates during all Bearcat away-games, beginning this evening on this station.

In the Colchester Oldtimers Hockey League, Canada meets Sweden and Czech Republic plays USA.

Registration for the Truro and Area Ball Hockey League is taking place at Deuville's Rink canteen from now until March 28th. Games will be played Monday through Thursday nights from late April until late July. There are six divisions ranging from pre-novice to midget. Get more information from Jeff Smith at 893-8192.
